Masturbation the Demon Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the TV series that ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, broke a lot of ground for a TV drama, along with quite a few taboos.

A popular and endearing character from the series was Anya (or Anyanka) a vengeance demon and patron saint to scorned women. Anya becomes mortal after a confrontation with Buffy's gang and ends up joining them.

Being over a thousand years old, Anya's ambivalent personality gives rise to frequent outbursts, shocking to those less experienced than she. Her brutal honesty arouses equal measures of tension and perplexity. She candidly admits to masturbation and has no inhibitions about describing the details of her sexual energy and demands:
Frankly it's ludicrous to have these interlocking bodies and not interlock. Please remove your clothing now.

The character of Anya has even been the subject of academic study. In an essay entitled Anya as Feminist Model of Positive Female Sexuality Tamy Burnett argues that Anya "stands alone as the only woman in the Buffyverse to remain unshamed and unpunished for her expressions of sexuality."

Oh, and the other thing about Anya that you should know - she's terrified of bunny rabbits.

Pleasantville Masturbation

Pleasantville is a 1998 motion picture in which two present day teenagers - Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon - find themselves inexplicably catapulted back in time to the idyllic world of a 1950's sitcom. Here they must adjust to new surroundings and the much more wholesome values compared to their own world.

Except being modern day teenagers their presence inevitably has a corrupting influence; such as in this scene where Reese Witherspoon takes her screen mother aside for a heart-to-heart chat about the sort of things all girls have to learn about at some stage. Take it away Joan Allen.

Masturbation doesn't feature that often in mainstream Hollywood movies but this one handles topic intelligently, humorously and well.

Masturbation vs Sex. Which of the following statements do you agree with?
